The Future of FSC Forest Management: Streamlining Standards for Outcome Orientation

Outcome orientation is a new concept for FSC with significant implications for forest management certification.
First, we will present the concept and the latest proposals for its deployment in FSC’s normative framework. Notably, this will impact both the Principle, Criteria and International Generic Indicators and the development of Forest Stewardship Standards in every country.
Then, we will dive into an example to illustrate what it means in practice.
Lastly, we will take proper time for Q&A, to discuss and let you exchange your views.

Frank

Franck Trolliet, FSC

Franck is supervising the Monitoring and Evaluation Programme at FSC International, where he has been working and contributing to the developments of monitoring and evaluation activities in the last 8 years. Notably, he has been designing and implementing impact evaluations with external researchers, piloting new data collection technologies, leveraging Forest Management certification data to generate new insights, developing the recent M&E team and contributing to the deployment of outcome orientation in FSC. Franck holds a PhD in forest ecology and has extensive experience in scientific research, field data collection, data analysis and reporting.

Lauri

Lauri Moisander, Luontoa

Lauri is a forester and seasoned sustainability professional with extensive experience in FSC certification, biodiversity conservation, impact assessment and monitoring. He is currently a partner at Luontoa, a company focused on advancing nature-based solutions, responsible forest management, and biodiversity data services. Luontoa helps organizations identify and manage nature-related dependencies, effects, risks and opportunities, and is on a mission to deliver solutions to halting biodiversity loss. Lauri has coordinated the development and testing of outcome monitoring framework for biodiversity involving remote-sensing and eDNA field studies in collaboration with key partners.

Prior to founding Luontoa in 2022, Lauri worked for several years at FSC International, where he served as Technical Expert and Policy Manager for Forest Management. In these roles, he led and contributed to numerous global initiatives, including the revision of group certification and forest management evaluations standards, the development of tools for smallholder and community forest certification, and the revision of the FSC Ecosystem Services Procedure.
